Guys and St.Thomas' Hospital

Professor Bapat was appointed as a consultant at the Guys and St. Thomas’ hospital in 2007 with special interest in aortic surgery.

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) program at St. Thomas’ Hospital is the largest TAVI program in UK and acts as a tertiary referral centre for complex TAVI cases. He has developed new methods of performing TAVI (trans-aortic approach), which led to improving patient outcomes all over the world. He is also an authority on the subject of valve-in-valve and has developed smartphone Apps, which are used all over the world as a reference tool for valve-in-valve. Prof. Bapat has trained over 100 centres in TAVI all over the world and continues to participate actively in teaching and training on all aspects of TAVI.

He has also started minimally invasive (key-hole) aortic valve replacement program (MIS) utilising the Anterior Right thoracotomy (ART) and his aim is to disseminate this technique in other centers in UK.

He has been involved in early feasibility study of the Transcatheter mitral valve implantation and has performed first-in-man implant of Edward’s FORTIS device in February 2014 and also of Medtronic’s Twelve device recently. He is the PI for the Intrepid trial investigating 12 device. He has also pioneered novel ways of using TAVI valves in open surgery or for indications such as MAC.

 Prof. Bapat has a large research and innovation program to help advance the field and has over 70 publications. He is an invited faculty for all major cardiology and cardiac surgical meeting. Recently he has also been appointed as associate Editor to the flagship journal of European association and as a committee member for Techno-college. His main focus for the next 5 years will be Innovation in valve designs and new treatments.
